Located on Mauna Kea Thirteen thousand feet above sea level is indeed one of the highest lakes in the United States. Lake Waiau means “swirling water” a sacred site in Hawaiian mythology known to be full of energy and mana (spirit, power). The most fascinating place I have ever been. When I first arrived, I was speechless. Seeing the cloud level below the lake was something surreal, I knew I had to capture this feeling from a vantage point to tell the story. I shot many rolls of film but not until after sunset will this became an otherworldly image. The painted skies were breathtaking as the wind is picking up leaving a silky pattern across the lake with a few patches of snow adding to the contrast. After I packed up it was near darkness and the temperatures were dropping quickly, a valuable reminder of all the beauty and powerful Mother Nature, which should never be taken for granted. A memorable experience, I will cherish forever.
